Taking the Big Leap on Curriculum-Based Coaching

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) is one of the largest school districts in the US. That includes over 33,000 kids in Middle School alone. CMS decided to unify the math curriculum across all schools as a way of eliminating one variable for inequity. The challenge was how to make implementation work for students and educators.

Educators make choices every day. How does a deep understanding of curriculum empower teachers from moment to moment, keeping students front of mind? Being able to lean on curriculum concepts will support bridging gaps in learning loss and create better alignment for lesson progressions.

This session walks through the challenges, solutions, and lessons learned as NTC and CMS established professional learning communities for educators based on the new middle school math curriculum.

Speakers:

  • Brandy Nelson, Executive Director, Learning and Teaching, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools
  • RaChelle Perkins, Secondary Math Specialist, Learning and Teaching, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools
  • Allison Paul, Program Consultant, New Teacher Center
