Policy Updates (Not Reflected in 2011 Review)

May 2012 – Prior to the 2011-2012 school year, Ohio required new teachers to complete a one-year transition program. H.B. 1 created the four-year-long Ohio Resident Educator Program for beginning teachers. Local residency programs must include:

(1) mentoring by teachers who hold a lead professional educator license;

(2) counseling to ensure that participants receive needed professional development; and

(3) measures of appropriate progression through the program.

This change significantly strengthens Ohio’s state policies with regard to NTC’s induction policy criterion 1 as summarized in the above 2011 Policy Review. Further, the implementation or Resident Educator Program Standards and Mentor Standards deepen the state’s standing with regard to criteria 3-7 and 9-10.
