ExpandED Pathways: Engineering Launched
Designed to increase the number of underrepresented educators of color in the STEM teaching pipeline
New York, NY, August 28, 2018 – ExpandED Schools, a New York City nonprofit dedicated to closing the learning gap and assuring that all kids have opportunities to discover their talents and develop their full potential and New Teacher Center, a national nonprofit focused on improving student learning by accelerating the effectiveness of teachers and school leaders, today announced the launch of ExpandED Pathways: Engineering.
ExpandED Pathways: Engineering is a new afterschool program where apprentice teachers, primarily people of color, gain experience in middle school STEM pedagogy while learning to teach under the mentorship of a STEM-specific school-based mentor trained by New Teacher Center. The mentor will work with new teachers during the regular school day and provide STEM coherence across the school day and after school.
ExpandED Pathways: Engineering is generously funded through 100Kin10, which unites the nation’s top academic institutions, nonprofits, foundations, companies, and government agencies to address the nation’s STEM teacher shortage. ExpandED Schools and New Teacher Center sparked their collaboration through the 100Kin10 network, creating a new initiative to build on their shared priorities around high-quality learning opportunities and outcomes for kids, teacher induction and preparation, and opportunities to build robust school partnerships.
This program uses the afterschool space as an experimental ground where apprentice teachers can gain experience and improve STEM instructional practices as well as improve expectations for student outcomes and educators’ confidence to deliver high-quality STEM instruction. It is also closely aligned with ExpandED Schools’ goals related to teacher pathways: increasing the number of educators of color in the teaching pipeline and particularly in STEM where people of color are notably underrepresented.
Emma Banay, Director of STEM Opportunities at ExpandED Schools reflected that, “we often recognize that afterschool is a place for students to experiment, play, and try things out, but that is also true for aspiring teachers. The power of Pathways: Engineering is using afterschool as a safe space for teachers to learn to teach, to offer the opportunity for the kind of instructional experimentation that is hard to do when you are new to teaching, and to support the skill-development of new educators of color with highly-trained STEM mentors.”
The inaugural teacher apprentice cohort will meet weekly, offering two hours of STEM enrichment programming, to students and two hours of mentorship and support. In addition, apprentice teachers participate in 42 hours of program development throughout the year, over a five-day Summer Institute and two Saturday workshops. Mentor teachers participate in New Teacher Center’s Professional Learning Series throughout the course of the school year.
The inaugural sites participating this year are: The Lorraine Hansberry Academy, North Bronx School of Empowerment, Creston Academy and the New Millennium Business Academy Middle School.
