NTC Statement on Anti-Asian Hate and Violence

On March 16, the world witnessed a horrific hate crime: the murders of eight people in Atlanta, GA, including six Asian women. Acts of violence and verbal abuse against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) have increased since the start of the pandemic, incited by racist, xenophobic, and discriminatory rhetoric. Stop AAPI Hate, an advocacy organization, reports over 3,800 incidents of hate against AAPI communities over the last 12 months.

The U.S. has a long, ugly history of institutionalized AAPI racism. From the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 to Japanese internment camps during World War II, a legacy of prejudice is still being turned into injustice today.

New Teacher Center stands in solidarity with our Asian American, Pacific Islander, and Asian communities. We unequivocally condemn the blatant racism and brutality against AAPI.

Dismantling racism, white supremacy, and xenophobia means we must act with courage. We must dare to do what’s right in service of justice. At NTC, our mission drives us to eliminate the everyday, predictable inequities entrenched in education systems. We’re engaged and committed — individually and organizationally — to lead with equity and foster belonging in every aspect of our work.

Our hearts are with our AAPI staff, partners, and communities. Let’s continue to build a new vision of empowerment, inclusivity, and humanity for our students and communities.
