TEACHER INDUCTION
Mentor Professional DevelopmentMentor Academy SeriesThe Mentor Academy is a professional development series consisting of eight, three-day sessions during Years 1 and 2, followed by three, two-day sessions in Year 3. The Academy's sequenced curriculum supports the development of comprehensive mentoring knowledge and skills using the NTC Formative Assessment System. The Academies build upon participants' prior knowledge and experience, and they help program leaders sustain cohesive practice throughout an induction program. Mentor Academies are available on a contract basis. NTC Formative Assessment System materials (Mentor and Beginning Teacher Padfolios; PDF Download: 2.33MB) are required for all participants and their beginning teachers. Academy OverviewEach Academy has a specific focus and promotes the collection and analysis of field-based data, as well as provides structured time for collaborative team planning. The Academies build a community of learners who support each other's growth as professional mentors. YEAR ONEMentor Academy 1 Foundations in Mentoring & Formative Assessment Fundamental knowledge and skills necessary for those who support beginning teachers Mentor Academy 2 Coaching and Observation Strategies Processes and tools necessary for collecting in-class teaching and learning data through the lens of professional teaching standards; processes for collaboratively analyzing and using instructional data to improve new teacher instructional practice Mentor Academy 3 Analysis of Student Work Principles of adult learning and strategies for coaching new teachers as they analyze student work to guide instructional planning Mentor Academy 4 Planning and Designing Professional Development for New Teachers Strategies and tools that help bring new teachers together for meaningful and responsive professional learningYEAR TWOMentor Academy 5 Coaching in Complex Situations Processes and tools for understanding complex coaching situations and building mentor capacity to support a variety of professional learning styles and needs; applications to current case of practice Mentor Academy 6 Mentoring for Equity Framework for mentoring beginning teachers on how race, language, and culture issues influence teaching and learning Mentor Academy 7 Extending Equity: Supporting Academic English Success Analysis of mentoring practice data for discovery of equity issues; supports for new teacher assessment of and teaching for academic language learning Mentor Academy 8 Teachers of Teachers Processes and tool for developing mentor leadership skills that advocate for and influence new teacher mentoring and induction programsYEAR THREEMentor Academy 9 Inquiry into Mentor Practice Mentor Academy 10 Inquiry Research and Collaboration Mentor Academy 11 Inquiry ColloquiumMentor Academies 9-11: After acquiring a knowledge and skill base through Mentor Academy Years 1 & 2, participants increase their capacity to serve as mentor leaders. The Year 3 academy series guides mentors through structured inquiries into their practice and responsive decision-making. This advanced academy series establishes an action research cycle that serves as a model for ongoing mentor professional development and induction program innovation.
